I began my career in beauty in 1994 and started to work part time as a Nail Technician, my clientele expanded very quickly and my job became full time.

We moved from London to a village north of Manchester in 2002 where I opened my very own salon, I concentrated on nails and my staff carried out other beauty treatments.

In 2006 we all attended the Manchester beauty show and I enrolled on a Lash extension course with Lash Perfect and after two years I became an educator for them covering the North west of England, including Scotland.

When Russian lashes evolved I watched many videos and taught myself this advanced technique, how hard I found this and continually slammed down my tweezers! However, I don’t advise this as I’ve ruined so many pairs, there’re delicate and sometimes very expensive. I practiced day after day and finally nailed it!

I’ve been teaching semi permanent lashes since 2008 and the Russian technique for the past two years and  I would love to share my passion, my knowledge and expertise with you.

I get such a sense of achievement when my students continually send me updates on their work and I’m so excited to become part of the Darling Beauty team, with our knowledge and continuous support, you too will have an amazing career in Lashes x

I went straight from uni into the glamorous world of television, beginning behind the scenes before finally moving in front of the camera ten years later.

Obviously it’s a world centred partly on looks and every step was taken to look my best. This wasn’t always easy post two babies and rocking up for the start of my 4am breakfast show shift at Sky News where I was a weather girl!

That is…until I discovered lashes!! Oh my, it was a no brainer. I became hooked on lashes, they were a wonderful confidence booster and made my time in makeup so much faster! My discovery also came at a crunch time as my two world’s started to collide – the role of Mummy versus TV Presenter.

I began to think ‘outside the box’ which ultimately led to my training in classic lashes and 6 years later here I am having been trained in dB Max lashes by Charlie.

I am now a fully qualified trainer as well as a self-confessed ‘lash addict’ and my mission is to spread the lash love. I never dreamed that what started as a little hobby could actually facilitate my move out of TV and become a great business and it’s there for you too!

I began my lash career in 2009. My background is pretty much hands on to whatever comes my way. I was a p/a in London before I had my 1st child then I was a Croupier, I trained in nails, had my 2nd child then trained in massage and waxing. I was a Personal Trainer & a Pilates Instructor oh and I’ve been a Black Cab Driver too LOL – yes I’ve done ‘The Knowledge’ (I think that covers it!) As you can gather I like a bit of variety in my life and I love trying out new things. I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up!

Which leads me into how did I stumbled across the eyelash phenomenon? A couple of my friends and I had started having eyelashes done, so I thought, I could do that! I found a course and before I knew it I was hooked. Lashes became my life. I absolutely love my job, if you can call it that. I like to call it ‘My Creative Social’. I was taught A Russian Volume technique by one of my Lithuanian clients. It was not the easiest technique to master but she loved the way I did them and I gradually began to introduce them to my clients. Before I knew it the majority of my clients wanted Russian Volume. I’m a great believer in opportunities and timing and things coming into your life for a reason. I went onto do loads of Russian Volume courses & conferences and learnt lots of techniques from Masters in the profession

Ironically, I was sitting with a friend and we were ‘brainstorming’ my ‘future’ name. So we googled my Surname which is ‘Surma’.
Surma means: eyeliner – Kohl – in Hindu – The Miracle of Surma for Eyes – is a popular eye care product that has been used from ancient time for enhancing the beauty of the eyes whilst keeping them healthy, cool and clean. SurmaLashes was a must – it was meant to be.

I fell into teaching – of course I did – a few of my clients and friends asked me to teach them how to lash as they liked the way ‘I did their lashes’. So I did my teacher training in 2013. I met Charlie at the first Lash Conference in the UK and we’ve been friends ever since. The rest is history.

People ask me why I train, as others could take away business, I will always say I’d never get into lash wars with anyone, there’s enough work for everyone and I can’t do all the people all the time. I want to spread the word and teach others likeminded to do what I’ve done and hopefully change someone’s life for the better – that’s my love of lashes and the lash world and all the amazing experiences and people I’ve met through this industry.

If you’re creative, you’ve got a steady hand, good eyesight (glasses you can see in are a must LOL), you like intricate things and you like people then I’d always say give it a go. If it’s something you think you could do then I’m only talking from my own experience that it has changed my life. If you don’t give it a go you’ll never know.

I spent the first half of my career in HR but as a creative person I felt unfulfilled sitting behind a desk for 8 hours a day pushing paper around and not seeing any tangible results. Stumbling across my local college one day I noticed an evening ITEC Anatomy, physiology and Swedish Massage course and enrolled that day. I loved learning about the body and once qualified, felt a sense of achievement helping others feel better about themselves both inside and out. From then on I started investigating other courses in the beauty arena and throughout the years, became qualified in facials, Microdermabrasion, lash lifts, microblading and nails to name but a few. But things really changed for me after completing my lash extension courses. After my first course, I did wonder if I’d made a mistake! It was so fiddly and barely got any lashes on my model and I thought I’ll never be good at this! But with time and lots of practice my skill and passion grew and 5 year later, having left the office far behind, I now run my own beauty business specialising in offering Classic and Russian lash extensions. I love seeing my clients faces light up once they see the finished result and it makes me so happy to have found such a creative outlet. Now I want to help others find that too, build a new career or additional income source doing something they will love.

Having joined the incredible DB family, I am delighted that I am now able to share my skills and experience with you and I know once you’ve trained with us, you will share our passion for lashing too! Stef X
